New iPhone App showcases South West food and drink

A new iPhone application championing the region’s local food and drink producers is being launched today (Tuesday 10 May) by Stephens Scown and Taste of the West.

‘Foodfinder SW’ is thought to be one of the first applications of its kind in the UK and is a mobile guide to the best quality producers, retailers and venues in the Westcountry.

By teaming up together, the legal firm and food and drink trade organisation want to showcase the South West’s produce on a national platform and the App is aimed at people either living or visiting the region.

The free App, developed by Createanet based in Torquay, lets users find local food and drink producers in their current location and what’s on offer. They can also search for specific suppliers; identify their exact location and how to get to them.

Customers can search by category for a specific product to see where it’s stocked; share their experiences by rating and reviews and get the latest news, food festivals and events and find out what’s coming up in their area.

Members of Taste of the West will receive their own profile on the App – they will be able to keep their profile updated including specific information about the service or product, special offers, images and where the produce is stocked.

Applications, commonly known as Apps, are programmes downloaded onto mobile phones with entertainment or practical functions, such as games, fitness, business, news and travel. Ten billion Apps had been sold worldwide by January 2011 and there are 6.2 million iPhone owners in the UK.

Simon Gawler is the head of Stephens Scown’s dedicated food and drink team in Exeter, Truro and St Austell. Commenting on the launch, he said: “As a firm, we are championing local food and drink producers across the South West – they are the lifeblood of our regional economy and the industry is big business. Many of our clients are producers and we’re delighted to be promoting their award-winning and top quality produce.”

He added: “The number of people using iPhones or smart phones is growing exponentially and we’re really pleased to be at the very forefront of this new technology working closely with Taste of the West. We think this new App will be really popular with the region’s suppliers and of course, the customers wherever they are in the country.”

John Sheaves, Chief Executive of Taste of the West, who has members based across the South West said: “Our sole purpose is to promote the Westcountry’s greatest produce and we’re very excited about the launch of this new App. Undoubtedly the development of this application will provide our members with a fantastic platform and some great opportunities for promotion.”

James Dart, joint owner of Darts Farm in Topsham, added: “As a member of Taste of the West, it’s great for us to be one of the first food and drink suppliers in the Westcountry to be featured on this new iPhone application and involved from the outset. As a forward-thinking company, I think any innovative way of communicating and interacting directly with our customers is a really positive move and we very much look forward to seeing this App grow in popularity.”
